Frequently Asked Question About Proficiency Certificate (PC) and Golf Handicap

A Proficiency Certificate (PC) in golf refers to a certification issued by a golf club or a golf association. It indicates that a golfer has demonstrated a certain level of proficiency in playing the game.

Golfers need to obtain a Proficiency Certificate before they are allowed to play on certain golf courses.

The issuance of Proficiency Certificates is often part of golf club or association’s programmes to ensure that players have a basic understanding of the game, which contributes to a smoother and more enjoyable golfing experience for all players on the course.

To attain a PC, golfers need to demonstrate their ability to play golf, understand basic rules and etiquette, and exhibit a certain level of skill on the golf course.

The handicap test is to establish a fair and standardised measure of a golfer’s ability, allowing for equitable competition among players of varying skill levels. Golfers with higher handicap indexes receive additional strokes when playing against those with lower indexes, thereby establishing a level playing field.

With a certified Handicap Index, golfers are able to play on any golf courses.

To pass the Handicap Test, candidates must:

  • Have the ability to pitch, chip & putt.
  • Have sufficient knowledge of golf rules & display proper golf etiquette.
