A ‘reunion’ from across the causeway

By Loh Teck Heng

Keppel Club welcomed Kelab Golf Negara Subang (KGNS) for a reciprocal game on April 20, 2024. To describe the event as a get-together of friends was an understatement, it was more like a family reunion of cousins, nephews and nieces.

Although the weather did not look promising, no one was too bothered by it. What mattered most was the opportunity to catch up with long-time friends and establish new acquaintances. After the pairing of teams was assigned at the buggy station, the newly-formed teams comprising members of both clubs exchanged pleasantries and tokens, before the participants proceeded to hole 10 for a group photo.

Vice-Captain Wong Kok Leong and I were paired with Ong Tien Kai and Jason Tan of KGNS. Although it was my first time meeting my two team mates from across the causeway, we were quick to warm up and got comfortable with one another almost immediately. Very quickly, Vice-Captain Wong and I delved in to share some tips on the terrain of Sime course and our guests were able to execute their swings and putts to a T.

Unfortunately, the weather did not hold up, so the game had to be suspended. While those who were scheduled for the later flights did not get to play many holes, we were fortunate enough to complete 15 holes.

Despite the suspension, this did not dampen the spirits of the participants at all. In fact, the merrymaking continued at Tee Top as we waited for dinner to commence. The night started with speeches by Keppel Club Captain Anthony Maniam and Dr Ronnie Yeo, the Captain of KGNS; followed by a gift exchange between both clubs. We were treated to a tantalising buffet spread, accompanied by live band entertainment. The selection of songs was a hit among some members from KGNS, who sportingly took to the floor to show off their sleek dance moves.

Among the programmes of the night was a lucky draw which saw many lucky winners going home with gifts from Keppel Club. Amidst the chatter and bantering, participants also posed for photos to commemorate this significant event.

As we bade farewell to our guests, Captain Ronnie Yeo led his team to a roaring three cheers for Keppel Club. Our guests were escorted to the waiting bus to take them home. It certainly was not goodbye or farewell, it was “see you” on July 6 for the return reciprocal game.
